lesson recap

what a great week of lessons. two dressage, and one jumping/xc. auto is showing more ability (er, willingness) to pick up the left lead canter, and he’s becoming more adjustable in the gait. hooray!

we had a ton of fun schooling the new xc jumps at MEC (the barn where i board/ride). since i ride very early in the morning, and rush to get to work, i don’t have time to take pics. i will take some this weekend. how boring is a blog without pics!?!

dare i commit to the schooling show in two weeks? lisa thinks it’s a no-brainer. i am a little more (ok, a LOT more) cautious than she is when it comes to our ability to perform an obedient dressage test or show jump a rushy horse in front of a judge and spectators. so, i’ve been on the fence (har! see what i did there?) about sending in my entry. but, auto’s been pretty good and predictable lately, so i’m warming up to the idea.

show or not, i do need a new bit for jumping (especially on xc)–one that offers a bit more oomph to my rein aid. i’m pretty settled on the mouthpiece: either double-jointed snaffle with lozenge or waterford (he works nicely in both). but i’m not sure if i want beval, universal, or dutch gag cheeks. any of you guys have experience with those types of cheeks, or with the neue schule bits? i know bitting can be a contentious subject, so please be kind, but i’m also interested in feedback!

  1. That’s a lot of lessons in one week! Can’t wait to see more pictures. As far as which bit, just generally I think the less, the better, but every horse is an individual so it’s hard to say. Wow, that was so helpful, lol!

    • i am very lucky to take at least 3 lessons a week. because auto is green with very challenging evasions and i’m green to green horses, the lessons are a combo of training me and training him. so many lessons is a real luxury, but a major goal of mine is to be able to work with auto on my own and not have it kill my confidence or convince me that i’m “ruining” him.

i agree about less is more in regard to bitting, especially when it comes to the mouthpiece. currently looking at a soft sweet copper double jointed lozenge dutch gag. of course it’s only available in the UK (cha-ching shipping charges!).

  2. Somehow I missed this post! You must horse show, duh. I was hoping to be able to come the day before and XC school but so far it doesn’t look like anyone with trailer space is going up for just the one day.

    • i realize that it might not be fun to come sans henry (and his tongue), but it would be great to have you (whether i show or not). i had an epic shit show of a ride this morning.

      • I probably should stay home and ride my pony so I don’t die in the show on the 13th. Maybe by October I’ll be ready to tag along to a schooling event? If we can ever XC school to see if Princess Henry will get his feet wet…
